Sunday, November 22nd at 5PM SL time I will be demoing Fire Centaur's incredible new Quiz Show system. You have to see this in action. Bring your cameras because this thing is amazing.

Just to give you an idea of what it does, when the buzzer is rezzed it takes you through a 6 step setup process that rezzes the seating arena and contest booths as well as team colors and scoreboard. All you have to do is set up the activity on Moodle and give out points to the question winners by clicking on the names as they drop down in order from the buzzer. It also includes a timer and fantastic colors and sounds to make it a real show.

Hope you can come to one of many shows happening at English Village.

I read Margaret's Q and the various responses on the use of Sloodle in the Educational Sector and am wondering whether you know of any organisations in the business world using Sloodle yet?

We are consulting in the ICT sector, and have a strong Learning division (SAP system trainng but also eLearning strategy development, etc. and content development. I am a keen SecondLife explorer, and thus my interest in developing solutions in Sloodle for business use.

Hi GMoney,

I wonder if this has to do with your current Active group. In secondlife, open your groups window by going to: Edit->Groups then make sure you have active the same group that the sloodle tool has been set to. Ie: today in my sloodle 101 class, I had to rez the presenter, but, my current active group was the English Village group, so the presenter was automatically set to the English Village group too.... then, however, since I was on Sloodle land, I had to deed the presenter to the "Sloodle Developers" group, and then when I tried to go to the next slide, I got the error message: "You do not have permissions to control this object" - the same message you are getting. This was because, my current active group was actually the English Village group, and I was trying to control a deeded object, which was set to only permit Sloodle Developer group members to use it. Even though I am a member of this group, it hadn't been set as my
"Active" group! Thus, I simply changed my active group in the groups menu to Sloodle Developers, and was able to resume control of the Presenter.

Try this and see if it works!

I followed the instructions. I used the revised Sloodle Set was able to connect but when I clicked the box again I got that same permissions error. I went to "Reset Scripts in Selection" and reset the scripts. Tried again to get objects from the box and still received that error. I will hopefully catch you online and maybe we can fix the problem. Thank you for your help

If you can't control it because of permissions, it might be because you are not recognized as the owner of the set. This can only happen if someone creates an object, puts a script in it, the script goes to a new state and then the object itself is given to someone else. If the new person rezzes the object with the script, and the script tries to check who the owner is, it will still be registered as the person who rezzed it in the earlier state (Unless the on_rez event has been coded in with a llResetScript()).

I'll take a look at the script to ensure the script gets reset when a new person rezzes it. In the mean time, you can select the entire object, go to the world menu, and choose "Reset Scripts in Selection" and try to configure it again.

I'll also pass you a totally reset on, in SL.

Give that a shot

Struggling with Sloodle 0.4 Set

For many weeks I have been trying to get my sloodle 0.4 set upgraded from an older version. I am able to get linked to my moodle site but when I go to pull a sloodle object from the box this statement appears "Sloodle Object Dispensor: Sorry GMoney Morpork. You do not have permission to use this object". I have exhausted all resources and I do not know what to do. Can anyone give me some clues?

Also on the old versions I was able to get a blue drop down box giving me a "Go to Page" my moodle site. That is not appearing anymore. Is that another problem? If so can anyone help me there?

Lets leave the iBank for a moment... and focus on the presenter.

This is such a great tool, it would be a shame not to let it reach its full potential.

Deeding does make life awkward, but we already have options to allow *group members* to control other objects - is there any reason this can't be set to work correctly for the presenter, if it isn't already?

As it happens you *can* switch between presentations with a presenter after it has been rezzed - and I think this includes presenters already deeded.
If you go to the configuration page for the presenter on Moodle, you can change which presentation it points to, then click on the refresh button on the presenter in SL. When the presenter is first configured, you must make sure it can be controlled by group members.

Gerald - want to see if that works for you? It might not, but it is something that *should* work

I used this with my last class in SL, where students each had to give an online presentation - and I wanted to avoid having to repeatedly re-rez the presenter.

Seperate server boxes are an option and indeed such an approach is used in the quizhud: http://www.sloodle.org/quizhud

It's important to mention that you are not stuck with a fixed presentation after you have deeded the object. You can still change it in Moodle, and then click the "Update" button on the Presenter in-world. (It's the button in the middle, at the bottom of the Presenter.)

Unfortunately, security is a bit of a concern with deeded objects. SLOODLE tools usually work by only letting their owner access the important features, but we can't do that when the object is deeded.

I suspect a separate deeded object would have pros and cons. If we can make it simple enough to setup, as secure as possible, and clearly obvious when it is or is not necessary, then it would probably be a sensible modification. I'm not sure if it should be a priority just now though, as there have been a lot of Presenter updates lately. I think we would be wise to focus on other things, like testing the iBank before its release etc..

I guess there's a design / usability question here which is whether to:
a) Always have the separate the "deeded server" as a separate object, so we only have one thing to explain and it's the same for everyone
b) Have a "deeded server" built in to the object, so that people who already own their land don't have to worry about it's existence, but people who don't can still rez it
c) Try to make the presenter clever enough that it will prompt the user to set up their "deeded server" only when needed, and give them or the landowner a "deeded server" object.

Actually, we could change the presenter so that instead of it's code actually changing the media stream, instead send comands to a "deeded server" as you mentioned, and have it change the media screen in order to get around the issue you mentioned...

Any thoughts Peter? Shall I put this on my Task list?

The Sloodle Presenter

Hi Everybody (and Sundry)!

I am a little uneasy about the directions to the Sloodle Presenter. Only after you have a media show already prepared and inside the presenter and ready to go, THEN you deed it to the land owner. This sounds an awful lot like you can't change the content once you do this, you are pretty much stuck with what you have until you can derez the presenter and get ready a new one. I cannot take back a deeded item and I have to bug the landlord until he can fix it for me. This would present all sorts of practical problems in a realistic educational setting. I am also planning on running multiple presenters too. Honestly, I would have been far happier with a separate server box that could be deeded once and left in some convenient place ever after, and separate presenter screens that could have their content independently adjusted as needed. This is how it works with the Bright Corp Web Browser and it is effective and convenient. Another nice feature is you can turn on and off the server box so as to allow the media channel to be used by other devices. Anyway, I am wondering how much flexibility I am going to have with the presenter.

now THAT would be cool -
ie: a Themed Icon for the Web Intercom

As much as it sucks to be true, i've learned over many years in IT (and other things, in fact) that looks really do matter far more than they should. Whether websites, cars, houses, or logos, people make a lot of initial judgements based just on how smooth something comes across.

Now if the product is really cool (like sloodle, or mrrobot**) people will come to it anyway.

Moodle is used by over 24 million students worldwide - from high-schools and community colleges to a number of the world's top 100 universities. It has achieved this without the large marketing budget that other leading vendors have. (I have heard that Blackboard spends far more on marketing and sales than it does on development... and I would not be surprised).

For example, from the CS dept at the University of Manchester:

Other Schools within the University are similarly utilising online tools to support learning, with most Schools using WebCT as a platform. So why has the Schools of Computer Science chosen to use Moodle instead? After a great deal of thought and consultation, we opted to use Moodle because it:

offered the right blend of tools for Computer Science students and staff;
has an interface that we felt was easier to use by students and staff;
has better support for handing technical subjects such as Computer Science e.g. display of complex equations via Latex;
is an open source project so if we feel something is missing, we can write our own extensions to the software;
was rooted in sound pedagogic foundations.

This last point is an important one. Most LMS systems were developed without any guiding pedagogic principles - Moodle is rare in that the pedagogy was a key driver from the very beginning. (It actually started out as someone else's PhD... Martin Dougiamas never did finish the PhD, but his software has been pretty successful!)

Hi Margaret,

In that case, you will probably want to clarify that SLOODLE is not actually a course/learning management system in itself. It is actually an add-on for the Moodle system, which is used widely at many educational institutions. (You can get some more information about Moodle statistics here.)

The purpose of SLOODLE is to make something possible with Moodle that wasn't directly possible before; specifically, integration with the Second Life virtual world. As far as we are aware, no such add-on currently exists for BlackBoard, or any other such system.

Hi Margaret,

Southampton Solent University is using Second Life with our Design School (for Fashion, Media Styling, Digital Music, Product Design) and also in our Business School and, soon to start, Journaslism. This is variously at HE levels 1-3 and M level.
We now have 3 sims, joined as one called (rather obviously) Solent Life. There is an underwater maze of library skills (in the Solent Life 2 area).

The main use of Sl%dle in this context is the registration booth (to tie the student ID to avatar name) and the blogging toolbar (fantastic for in world reflective journals, but we get to keep the data on our VLE so reliable for evidence of work etc). Although I have experimented with the other tools in the box, we haven't use them 'in anger' with students as yet - this is more down to the tutors and students than the tools. It seems that Second Life is quite a large step to take in itself, so it may be next academic year before there is enough experience to set meaningful activities/assessments which fully utilise both Sloodle and SL tools.

Im afraid that we only know about *some* of the courses using SLOODLE - as anyone can download the software and grab a copy of the tools inworld.

And of the courses we do know about, we don't necessarily have permission to publicly share the information...

I can say that SLOODLE is being/has been used in classes in North and South America, Europe and the Middle and Far East and I think is being trialled now in Australia also.

I've used SLOODLE at the University of the West of Scotland (Computer Science), Jeremy at San Jose State University (Library and Information Science), the published case study is a virtual cultural exchange (KAIST in Korea and DWC in Dubai).

Subjects taught also include (afaik) - Human Computer Interfaces, English Language (as a foreign language), literature, Introductory Chinese, introduction to programming, and teacher training.

I am hoping to invite more SLOODLE users with experience of teaching to come along to future Community Meetings to share their experience - hope to see you there,

Well, it's quite a pity. I found myself drawing a blank, trying to remember what the original looked like, and had to go google it..... the two interlocking oo's seem to work much better in the middle - at first I was at a loss to see how the letters 'SL' were visually distinct from oodle, but I guess since the oo were unique, it made the sl, by extension, unique. Still, I hope whoever in LL got anal about that has perpetual constipation... stupid stupid stupid, and obstructionist to things that ultimately help their product and company.

I've had similar arguments with moodle- i'm not a partner, but have made huge strides in promoting moodle in my state and at national conferences - but since i'm not a moodle partner, i can't list myself as a moodle trainer, consultant, blah blah, and since i'm not multi-man company, I can't become a partner. But really, where does it end?

Anyway, it's a day late and a dollar short, but a logo should probably be as simple as possible, so it looks good even when tiny - which means limited gradients/shadows, and generall no small text.

Actually, Gimp 2.4 special effects filters...

The logo story is a long one
I'm still happy to receive nominations for new logos as long as:

SLOODLE is fully uppercase,
the letters 'SL' are not visually distinct from the 'OODLE' part.

This came about via lengthy discussions with Linden Lab legal, which are not worth repeating.

The new logo has really had a mixed response - some people do think it better, some really do not like it at all.

You can catch the end of the logo debate here, and even download the Gimp files for the current logo if you want to play around with that.

Good suggestions there. I was never really fond of Eclipse myself, but it's been about 4 years since I've tried it, and I'm always hearing of all these plugins for it, so I'll give it another bash.

For general code editing, I go with Notepad++ on Windows, for LSL and PHP. Syntax highlighting, and nifty split-screen and tabbed file browsing, and that's about it! I also do a fair bit of the PHP (during prototyping/debugging) in the wonderful vim (command line editor on my server).

In the past, I've found HTML-Kit to be remarkably good with the PHP stuff, and if you've got PHP installed, then it will run your scripts in the editor to give you a preview, which is pretty cool. It's all-in a rather bloated app though (who really needs voice recognition when coding HTML, for example?!). Impressive anyway.

For SVN, I use TortoiseSVN on Windows as well. Aboslutely brilliant bit of software, although it does make the transition to command line rather uncomfortable when working on a server!

[Best PHP editor]

The greatest php editor is PHPEd - i really like it because it integrates with TortoiseSVN, so once you set up a project and make changes, you can easily submit your changes to an SVN repository with about 3 clicks.

[LSL Reference]
Since I regularily refer to the LSL wiki while developing, fast access is needed. Instead of going back and forth to the wiki, which can take a long loading time, I used http://www.httrack.com/ to download the entire wiki to my hard drive. Then access is super fast - allowing me to easily reference LSL documentation when needed

Anyhow, thats it for now, I hope this proves useful to the team, and interested developers wanting to digg in to Sloodle!

Just realised I hadn't mentioned here that v1.2 is done now. Physics works again, which is fun.

Anyways, that's the new version of the stackable cubes done (v1.1). They now snap to the nearest side of the nearest cube (not just vertically), and they match rotations and positions properly and everything. Quite fun for making pixellated 3d artwork!

I've had to disable physics unfortunately, as it was causing some pesky bugs, but dragging the cubes around is actually easier without it (they just don't tumble and fall when you let them go). You can re-enable physics somewhat by setting the "USE_PHYSICS" variable in the script to TRUE, although it only enables physics while you are actually dragging the cube.
